BARTHOLIN'S GLANDS, BARTHOLIN'S CYST, AND BARTHOLIN'S ABSCESS

Updated: Jan 20, 2023

WHAT ARE BARTHOLIN'S GLANDS?

Bartholin's glands are glands situated on either side of the vulva near the vagina opening.

This is nature's provision for lubrication during sexual intercourse. Under the influence of hormones a stirling, lubricating liquid is expressed through these glands in their ducts through a small opening.

So this is a wonderful arrangement of mother nature to keep both the male and female friction true and save them from injuries during sexual acts.

HOW ARE BARTHOLIN'S CYSTS FORMED?

If these openings of the glands which are just pinheads and not visible to the naked eye get blocked by infection or unhygienic conditions the secretion of the glands may pent up inside and lead to a collection of secretions leading to cyst formation called the Bartholin's cyst.

HOW DOES BARTHOLIN'S ABSCESS FORM AND PRESENT?

Initially, the female is not aware of the cyst unless the size becomes large and gives discomfort or in case the cyst becomes infected it may become Bartholine’s abscess. Leading to excruciating or throbbing pain, redness and fever and dispensed i.e. painful sexual intercourse.

WHEN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR? What is the treatment? How to prevent recurrence?

So in case of a cyst or abscess of Bartholin’s gland one has to see the doctor.

In case of a simple cyst causing discomfort, the doctor can remove the cyst either under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. If it is an abscess, then the pus has to be drained immediately to relieve you from pain and fever. To stop recurrence a procedure called marsupialization has to be done.

and Most Importantly,

DO NOT WORRY.
